Burscough Wellbeing and Leisure Hub Reopens Following Multi Million Pound Transformation

2 Apr 2025

Burscough Wellbeing and Leisure Hub, West Lancashire, has reopened following a substantial regeneration project, delivering a revitalised facility designed to support the health and wellbeing of the local community for years to come.

Commissioned and funded by West Lancashire Borough Council (WLBC) the transformation has been led by Alliance Leisure, procured and managed through the UK Leisure Framework, owned by Denbighshire Leisure (DLL). The Framework brought together some of the country’s most experienced leisure development specialists to work on the project including Universal Construction, BGH Architects and Hadron Consulting.

Seb Rowe, Business Development Manager at Alliance Leisure, says: “It has been a privilege to work with WLBC. The improvements significantly enhance the experience for all users, providing a high-quality fitness and wellbeing service that caters to a diverse range of needs. By investing in infrastructure upgrades, the council is also safeguarding the building’s long-term efficiency and sustainability.”

The project has delivered a remodelled, extended and fully equipped fitness suite, a new ground-floor cycle studio and a flexible second studio, currently hosting classes. The sports hall and squash courts have been refurbished with a new Teraflex overlay floor, fresh line markings, and new LED lighting to enhance usability and reduce energy consumption. Visitors will also benefit from a refreshed entrance and reception, alongside improvements to changing facilities, toilets, and community spaces.

Externally, the centre has undergone significant enhancements, including a new roof, refurbished façade, landscaping, and upgrades to the car park. Infrastructure improvements, such as a modernised plant, mechanical, and electrical systems have been implemented to deliver long-term operational efficiency. Additional security measures, including access control turnstiles and new fencing, have also been introduced.

Councillor Coughlan, lead member for Leisure at West Lancashire Borough Council, comments: “This investment represents a major commitment to the long-term health and wellbeing of our residents. The transformation of Burscough Wellbeing and Leisure Hub means we can offer modern, accessible and standard-setting facilities that meet the needs of our growing community.

Sustainability has been a key focus throughout the redevelopment with energy-efficient lighting, improved insulation and modern heating and ventilation systems all contributing to the council’s net zero ambitions

“Sustainability has been a key focus throughout the redevelopment with energy-efficient lighting, improved insulation and modern heating and ventilation systems all contributing to the council’s net zero ambitions. These improvements not only enhance the centre’s environmental credentials but also ensure cost-effective and efficient operation in the long run.

“We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all partners for their dedication and hard work in helping us achieve these goals.”

The official opening event where key stakeholders joined members of the community to celebrate the completion of the project has now taken place. Residents are encouraged to visit the newly improved centre and explore the enhanced facilities on offer.
